We began working with TC Dog and the City of Ithaca in the summer of 2008. As plans to create an off-leash dog park began to take shape, Cayuga Compost accepted the challenge of collecting, processing and composting pet waste from the dog park. Later that year, the City of Ithaca arranged to have the dog park sited on property controlled by the New York State Department of Parks and Recreation, and Historic Preservation.
Collecting and composting of pet waste began on Earth Day 2009 using two 64-gallon totes, collected weekly. Between 200-300 pounds of waste are collected each week. The pet waste composting windrow is separate from the windrows of food waste compost.
Pet owners are responsible for curbing their animals using compostable corn-based plastic bags, and placing waste pouches in provided receptacles. The cost of these bags is a substantial portion of the annual cost of the program (approx 2/3 of the total annual cost).
Finished product will be analyzed at the end of the composting cycle to ascertain most appropriate uses.
